Leading the Strawderman Way

Expectations

All Strawderman counselors must have:

  • A love for children

  • A love for the great outdoors

  • An appreciation for an authentic rustic experience

Counselor requirements:

  • Female

  • At least 18 years old

  • Capable of teaching and supervising one or more camp activities daily

  • Able to lead with enthusiasm, creativity, and responsibility

At Strawderman, counselors are expected to:

  • Nurture, inspire, and teach

  • Be role models

  • Lead by example

Being a counselor at Camp Strawderman is a great responsibility—and an even greater privilege.

Many Strawderman campers return later in life to serve as counselors. It’s one of the toughest, yet most rewarding jobs—building lifelong memories, developing leadership and management skills, and standing out when preparing for a career or resume.

Requirements

To qualify for the position of counselor, you must:

  • Supervise campers whenever they are in the cabin

  • Participate in the full life, ethos, and spirit of Strawderman

  • Uphold the ideals and traditions of the camp

  • Teach one or more camp activities for at least four hours per day

  • Help out where needed

  • Eat all meals with your assigned cabin group

  • Sleep in your assigned cabin’s counselor’s room (attached to the camper room)

  • Share the counselor room with your co-counselor

  • Maintain the highest standards of conduct

  • Set a strong example—campers will follow your lead
